Holi Festival Experience in Kathmandu

Holi is definitely the most colorful festival in the whole world, literally. It’s an ancient Hindu festival that is now being celebrated even in non-Hindu places. We were lucky that we were in Kathmandu during the Holi Festival and had the chance to celebrate this colorful festivals with the locals.

We decided to go to Thamel early in the morning to see what’s happening and while waiting at the bus stop in Boudha we started seeing traces of color from the local people that we see on the road. We saw many children covered in color dust, some red and yellow dust scattered all over the floor and some dogs with red dust on their forehead.

As we arrived in Thamel, the roads were still quiet until about an hour after when the crowds started to appear. There were so many local teenagers walking around Thamel throwing out colorful dust and water to everyone they met. They also told us that there’d be a huge concert at Basantapur Durbar Square where most people would go to to listen to live bands.

 It was very festive and we had so much fun celebrating Holi festival in Kathmandu. Here are some tips on how to survive Holi in Kathmandu:

1. If you’d like to showcase all the color dust that you’ll get from everyone then wear a white shirt but if not then wear darker colored shirts (and also to avoid stains).

2. Water is being thrown at almost anyone walking on the streets so make sure that you put your valuables on sealed bags or better yet just leave them in a safe in your guesthouse or hotel.

3. Put plastic covers on your camera to avoid it from getting damaged by water and the color dust.

4. Close your eyes when someone puts colored dust on your face to prevent your eyes from getting irritated. And also close your mouth as well to avoid ingesting some of the dust. Some people also puts cotton balls in their ears to avoid color dust from getting inside.

5. This is just a once a year celebration and if you flew all the way from your country to Nepal or India just to celebrate Holi with the locals then be prepared. Enjoy and have fun!
